Ransomware Shut Down a 158-Year-Old Company | Case Study

If you’re reading this it means the internal infrastructure of your company is fully or partially dead… Let’s keep all the tears and resentment to ourselves and try to build a constructive dialogue.

This was the ransom note left by the hackers that launched a ransomware attack on a 150-year old company in the UK. (Source)

Introduction

This case shows what happens when organisations treat cybersecurity as optional.

Knights of Old, a transport company in the UK with over 150 years of history, experienced a catastrophic breach. One employee used a weak password. Hackers guessed it. Within hours, they locked the company’s systems, destroyed backups, and made recovery impossible. The ransom demand exceeded the company’s means, forcing it to shut down.

As a result, 700 employees lost their jobs. That’s 700 families disrupted with no warning and no time to prepare.

Unfortunately, attacks like this are no longer rare. They occur more often than most companies realise. However, proactive measures can prevent them.

Challenge

Reports show that Knights of Old had grown over time, and with growth came blind spots. One simple weak password became the entry point for a total system lockdown.

This case demonstrates the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures. Organisations cannot assume everything is fine; unmonitored systems and outdated processes can create vulnerabilities that escalate quickly.

A client we work with wanted to avoid a similar fate. They were not facing a breach or crisis at the time. However, they knew their IT systems had grown over the years, creating blind spots. They needed clarity and assurance. Most importantly, they wanted to make sure they weren’t leaving anything to chance.

The goal was proactive preparation, not reactive firefighting.

Solution

The client commissioned a full security review and hardening project.

We identified and resolved several security gaps before attackers could exploit them. We addressed outdated software, monitored previously overlooked systems, and secured vulnerable devices.

Once addressed, we secured logins, strengthened device protection, and brought systems up to date.

We then tested backups to ensure they would perform reliably if ever needed.

At the same time, the full team completed cyber awareness training to help them recognise phishing attempts, suspicious links, and social engineering tactics.

Overall, the project focused on reducing risk, improving resilience, and giving the client peace of mind.

Results

After our security hardening project:

  • The client gained a clear view of their entire IT environment.

  • Leadership assured that systems were structured and monitored.

  • Staff knew what to look out for and how to act on potential threats.

  • The business was no longer just one weak password away from disaster.

The client regained control, reduced stress, and could focus on business growth with confidence.

The shutdown of Knights of Old serves as a stark warning: cybersecurity cannot be optional. Companies that ignore weak points, unmonitored systems, and outdated processes risk irreversible damage.
