40% of Irish businesses faced a cyber-attack in the last 12 months. Most thought they were prepared.
That comes from Hiscox’s 2025 Cyber Readiness Report, based on 500 Irish businesses.
Here is the harder number. 69% of businesses that paid a ransom were attacked again within six months. Paying does not protect you. Preparation does.
This month we cover what the threat looks like right now, what a properly managed security programme includes, and why the most important decision you make has nothing to do with technology.
The numbers behind the threat
40% of Irish businesses attacked in the past 12 months. 70% paid a ransom to recover data. 29% still had data leaked after paying.
Irish SMEs are targeted because attackers know where the gaps are. Microsoft’s 2025 Work Trend Index found only 19% of employees in smaller Irish businesses receive regular cybersecurity training, compared to 48% in large organisations. That gap is profitable.
The businesses that avoid serious damage have one thing in common. Someone is watching their systems before something escalates. A suspicious login at 2am. A file accessed from an unknown location. A credential that should have been disabled months ago.
If your current approach is antivirus and occasional password changes, you are exposed. The question is not whether a threat targets your business. It is whether anyone catches it before it costs you.
Not sure how exposed you are? We will give you a straight answer in 20 minutes.

Your IT provider should carry risk with you, not hand it back to you.
Most IT contracts are built around hours and tickets. You log a request, someone responds, you pay for time. Anything outside that becomes your problem.
A managed service means your provider takes responsibility for the outcome, not just the activity. They spot issues before you do, because they are watching your environment properly.
Ask your current provider this: if my systems go down at 7pm on a Friday, what happens?
The answer tells you whether you have a managed service or a helpdesk you pay monthly for.
Cyber threats are not slowing down, and the gap between prepared businesses and the rest is growing. If you have any doubt about where your security and managed services stack stands right now, we are an easy phone call away.
